Caricatures, which are hand drawn cartoonish portraits, exaggerate a person’s prominent facial features, creating a cartoon like character.

Caricatures are most often drawn in pencil or ink on white paper.  Some are even done in color.

To learn to  draw caricatures successfully, there are  7 facial features you need to focus on and pay very close attention to.  In particular notice and see features that are out of the norm or ordinary.

1.  The shape of your subjects eyes–are they round or oval, large or  small?

2.  What about the eyebrows–are they thin or heavy, natural or painted on?

3.  What about your subject’s mouth and lips?  Are the lips full or pencil thin?  Is their mouth large or small?

4.  Notice their ears .  Are they small, normal,  or large like Dumbo?  Are their ears close to their head or do they stand straight out?

5.  What about their smile and their teeth?  Are there any missing teeth or gaps between teeth like David Letterman?  Are their teeth straight or crooked?  Small or abnormally large?

6.  Take a look at your subjects head.  Is it round, oval, or square?  Do they have a strong chin like Jay Leno, or is it weak?

7.  And don’t forget about the hair.  This can play a prominent roll in your drawing.  If your subject is very vain about their hair, make it the most prominent feature in your caricature.

How to Draw Caricatures

October 26th, 2009

How to draw caricaturesLearning how to draw caricatures is easy once you understand exactly what they are. It is often said that a caricature is a cross between a cartoon drawing and a portrait. In a caricature, outstanding features are exaggerated and simplified to produce a picture that is often humorous but life like. To learn how to draw caricatures requires that you study people’s faces, habits, and idiosyncrasies.

If you want to become proficient at learning how to draw caricatures, you need to take some time to notice the way in which people’s features differ. This can be done by studying people’s faces in magazines or even out on the street. Try to create a mental caricature of them in your mind. Look at faces from various angles also.

Try to make sense of how each facial feature appears in relation to one another. Are there any features that particularly stand out? For example some people have a large smile or bulging eyes. When creating a caricature, you need to know exactly which features you should exaggerate. These are the features that you think are different in size or shape to what a normal face would have.

When actually making your caricature  drawing on paper, employ these two common techniques that most caricature artists use:

· Firstly, you should use bold simple lines that are both dark and fat. There should also be a marked distinction between the various features of the face.

· Secondly, you need to use shadows, but they should not overpower the bold lines. There is no need to draw every shadow, just the ones that help to define the person. Also, the hair should be simplified. There is no need to draw every individual hair, just keep it simple with basic lines and a few shadows.
